Fun and feasting at yesterday’s bowls’ event

A 'run' of handmade carpet bowls

A great afternoon was had by all who came to Buckhaven Community Centre to join in the bowls’ tournament.  The event was formally opened by Gavin Grant of Fife Libraries, Arts & Museums, who gave the audience a short history of the carpet bowls’ industry in Fife.  Information and sketchbooks had also been laid out by ceramicist Frances Priest and the potters involved in the project about the processes they used to create the bowls and also their inspiration.

BBB Tournament

We have set the date for the BBB Bowls Tournament – Thursday 25th November 1pm – 3pm at Buckhaven Community Centre. Decoration Begins

Sponge printing with under-galze

Our group met up again on Thursday for a day of exploring decoration techniques. We looked at  under-glaze sponge printing and painting, incising and inlay and on-glaze transferes.  It was great to see how the designs work on the three dimensional forms and I think we all had a sense of the project really starting to come together.

BBB’s Rolls On…

The Buckhind Braes Baws project is rolling along and we are fast approaching the completion of the design stage.  Our multi talented group have embraced every aspect of the project so far, developing exciting and individual responses to the Fife Coastal Path at Buckhaven. Collectively these ideas will form curios, beautiful and intriguing pattern designs for our sets of carpet bowls.

Buckhaven Carpet Bowls

The first time I saw a set of carpet bowls was in an antique shop in Edinburgh, not long after I’d moved to Scotland to study ceramics at Edinburgh College of Art. Prettily patterned and coloured, some in pristine condition, others dinted and chipped through years of use and play, these typically Scottish ceramic toys caught my eye and stuck in my memory. An invitation from FCA&C to take up one of the Fife Coastal Path Residencies has brought that memory back into sharp focus and inspired an idea to make contemporary versions of the carpet bowls.
